Alaska Paid Sick Leave: How LeaveAssist Helps Your Business Stay Compliant

Alaska Paid Sick Leave

Alaska’s Paid Sick Leave Law — What Employers Need to Know

In November 2024, Alaska residents approved Ballot Measure 1, introducing a statewide Alaska Paid Sick Leave (PSL) requirement for employers—effective July 1, 2025. Key provisions of the law include:

  • Applicability: Most employers with workers in Alaska must comply, with a few exceptions (e.g., apprentices, some agricultural workers, minors with limited hours, etc).
  • Accrual Rate: Employees earn 1 hour of sick leave for every 30 hours worked, regardless of job classification
  • Annual Caps: Employers with 15 or more employees must allow up to 56 hours per year; with fewer than 15 employees, the cap is 40 hours per year
  • Usage: Leave can be used immediately as accrued, with no waiting period; it applies to personal illness, caring for relatives, or addressing issues like domestic violence, sexual assault, and stalking
  • Carryover & Rehires: Unused leave carries over each year (no payout required), and employees rehired within six months must have their unused leave reinstated
  • Employee Notice: Employers must provide written notice of PSL rights to employees upon hire or by July 31, 2025
  • Documentation: Employers may require documentation for absences of three or more consecutive days, but cannot demand medical details or require coverage arrangement for shift absences
  • Proposed Regulations: The Alaska Department of Labor unveiled draft regulations in late June 2025. These clarify rules around frontloading, subbanking PTO, notice timelines (no more than 10 days for foreseeable absences), paystub reporting, and more
